Short term disability insurance came to the forefront of my mind when, Last winter, my husband went out to get the mail, slipped on a patch of ice and went down.
He had really injured his ankle and was in pain for days. We worried that it was broken, but when we went to the doctor, we discovered that it was merely a sprain. Learning that we would not need to pay most of our savings into doctor’s bills went a long way toward making us feel much better.
We were struck with the sober realization that as we didn’t have any short-term disability insurance, a real broken ankle could be a major issue. My husband performs contract work, and as such does not have a steady employer who can provide health insurance. It was obvious that our family needed to get enrolled in an insurance plan that included short-term disability insurance. This was easier said than done, especially since we didn’t have the faintest notion where to actually start. View post from

We discussed calling an insurance agent, and finally decided to do so. We realized our error as we spent an hour and a half learning about cabin insurance even thought we were direct to the agent that we did not have a cabin. Needless to say, we were frustrated. My husband especially wanted something that was clear and easy to understand. Our investigations took us to the internet, but there were so many websites out there that we had a difficult time determining which ones were worth looking at and which ones were scams.
When we did find a list of insurance providers, we discovered that the one that we initially thought might work did not in fact provide
maternity health insurance. We were not expecting a baby any time soon, but we had examined the possibility and did want to have kids before we got too much further into our 30’s. Although it seemed simple enough, we just could not find a good plan that would give us both maternity benefits and short-term disability benefits.
It was just so hard to know what to do, as there was no one available to give us help and suggestions on sorting through the various plans available. It seems that there is a difficulty with how health insurance plans are presented to the general public, especially individuals who do not find their employment in the traditional way. Although it took quite a while, our research bore fruit when we uncovered a website that explained in great detail what each available plan offered to us.
